There's just something about enjoying a big scoop of ice cream on a hot summer day. Oh, heck, who am I kidding?! There's just something about enjoying a big scoop of ice cream on any day of the year!

But if you're vegan or have a dairy allergy or intolerance, it's not always easy to find an ice cream shop that has options to suit your needs.

You could go for a store-bought brand, but then you're limited to a handful of flavors, not to mention they can be wildly expensive! Plus, they often contain questionable ingredients and additives you'd rather do without.

That's where these vegan ice cream recipes comes in! With so many great ideas for making your own ice cream, not only can you control what goes into your frozen dessert, you can get as creative as you like with flavor combinations and additions. How fun is that?!

What is vegan ice cream made of?

One of the great things about vegan ice cream is that it can be made with so many different ingredients. Coconut milk, oat milk, cashews, bananas, and even chickpeas and avocado are some of the ingredients you'll see in this recipe collection.

I hand-picked each of the amazing recipes in this roundup to showcase the wide variety of base ingredients and different ways to make vegan ice cream.

Equipment Notes

Many of the recipes use a high-powered blender or food processor as well as an ice cream maker.

If you're in the market for an ice cream maker, the one I use and highly recommend is the Whynter Upright 2.1 Qt. With a built-in compressor, there's no canister to freeze in advance - just plug it in and churn!

Although I have never used a Ninja Creami, I've had many readers reach out to me letting me know that it has worked well for them using any ice cream base.

Once you've made your ice cream, you'll need something to store it in. I use these Tovolo containers, but any freezer-safe container will do the trick!

Can I make these without an ice cream maker?

If you don't have an ice cream maker and don't plan on buying one any time soon, don't fret! You can still make deliciously creamy non-dairy ice cream.

You'll notice that many of the recipes include a no-churn option, but when in doubt, here are two common methods I've used before:

  1. Freeze and whisk. Pour the liquid ice cream mixture into a shallow, freezer-safe container. Place in the freezer and whisk vigorously every 45-60 minutes to incorporate air and break up the icy pieces. Repeat until the ice cream reaches your desired consistency.
  2. Freeze and blend. Pour the liquid ice cream mixture into ice cube trays, and once frozen solid, blend the cubes in a food processor along with a bit of non-dairy milk until creamy.

1. Oat Milk Ice Cream

This is our most popular ice cream recipe for good reason. A base of oats and cashews gives it such a luscious creaminess, and the vanilla-maple flavor is pure heaven. Made without coconut or added oils, it's versatile, too! Try it with different sweeteners and flavor extracts.

2. Nut-Free Chickpea Ice Cream

Have you tried chickpea ice cream? Prepare to fall in love! This amazing treat is not only dairy-free and egg-free, but also contains no nuts or coconut. It's rich, silky, and packing serious chocolate flavor. No one will ever guess this ice cream is vegan and made with chickpeas!

3. Date-Sweetened Vegan Ice Cream

This date-sweetened vegan ice cream is perfectly creamy and made with just 5 wholesome ingredients! Dates lend a warm, caramel-like flavor, and for the base, in addition to the oats, choose between cashews or sunflower seeds (pictured).

4. Silken Tofu Protein Ice Cream

Classic vegan coconut ice cream is super easy to make and serves as a great base for creating other flavors and adding fun mix-ins like cookies and nuts. Be sure to check out the "secret ingredient" emulsifier in this recipe!

Serving Suggestions

Once you've made your vegan ice cream, it's time to indulge! Serve with all your favorite topping like  chocolate sauce, date caramel, non-dairy whipped cream, glazed walnuts or candied pecans.

Storage Tips

Be sure to store your vegan ice cream in an airtight container to prevent it from getting freezer burn and picking up odors from other foods.

I also recommend that you check the notes in the recipe you're using regarding how long it will keep, as this may vary depending on the ingredients.

You'll also typically need allow your ice cream to sit at room temperature for a few minutes to soften after it has hardened in the freezer.

    What kind of clean-up is involved with your recommended ice cream maker? What else can you tell me about it? I have a small Cuisinart one and a large buy-ice-and-salt churn. The small one isn't enough and the big one is a challenge for my chronic illness.

      Hi Pixie,
      Good question—glad you asked! That's another thing I like about this new machine (Whynter) compared to my old Cuisinart. Cleanup is much easier. The stainless bowl has a handle and lifts right out. There is also the center paddle that lifts out. Both are very light and easy to wash. I've never had any overflow or anything during churning, so I've never even had to so much as wipe the base of the machine. I should mention though that it is quite heavy. So it's helpful to have a place to store it that allows you to not have to move it far when you're ready to make ice cream.

    Thank you so much for the vegan ice cream recipes. I am trying to avoid sugar, but I just love ice cream. More specifically, I love the less conventional flavors, like pistachio, coffee and mint chocolate chip flavors (vanilla is just so boring). I was thrilled when I scrolled through the vegan ice cream recipes and found all three of my favorite flavors! I use Splenda or monk fruit, not real sugar. Dairy-free and sugar free, but still delicious. Thanks a bundle for posting my fave flaves.
