Air Fryer Tortilla Chips are easy to make with just 3 simple ingredients! Once you try these homemade chips, you'll never buy a bag at the grocery store again! Low in fat with an oil-free option, these healthy tortilla chips are sure to become your new favorite snack. Dip them into some fresh salsa, creamy guacamole, or vegan queso for the perfect pairing! Oven-baked instructions also included.

Have you ever been sitting at your favorite Mexican restaurant when you realize that you've managed to devour the entire basket of tortilla chips and salsa before you've even placed your order?

And then you come to regret it later when you start thinking about how much oil and salt must have been in those chips?

I was hoping it wasn't just me! 😉

Well, I have the perfect solution - these air-fried tortilla chips!

I fully admit that I am a tortilla chip addict. They're my go-to snack food. Actually, I love pretty much all things made from corn, as I mentioned on my About page. Cornbread, polenta, tortilla chips, and the oh-so-important corn pudding and cornbread dressing at Thanksgiving!

Anyway, thanks to the magic the air fryer, we can now munch on a batch of restaurant-style tortilla chips guilt-free in a matter of minutes!

Making your own tortilla chips is easier than you think, and the best part is that unlike restaurant chips or the store-bought kind, YOU control the amount of oil and salt!

You can add any spices and seasonings you love and not have to worry about hidden dairy or other ingredients you don't want in your chips.

If you crave crunchy snacks like I do, check out my oil-free kale chips, tamari pumpkin seeds, whole wheat crackers, and bourbon spiced candied pecans next.

Ingredients

The full recipe and ingredient amounts can be found in the printable recipe card below.

  • Corn Tortillas - You'll want to use the taco size. Feel free to use yellow or white corn tortillas. The ingredients should be very simple, usually just corn, salt, and possibly lime. I usually go for yellow corn because it's more flavorful.
  • Avocado Oil Spray - You can use a Misto oil sprayer or other type of spray bottle, or look for the healthier options that are made without propellants. There are multiple brands available. Alternatively, you can brush the tortillas with oil. For oil-free, see "Variations" below.
  • Sea Salt - Use as much or as little as you'd like. You're in control!

How to Make Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

Preheat your air fryer to 340°F.

Spray or brush both sides of the tortillas with a little oil and sprinkle with salt.

Stack the tortillas and cut into 8 wedges.

Place the wedges in a single layer in the air fryer basket.

Air fry for about 6 minutes or until perfectly crispy.

Expert Tips

  • Be sure to check on the chips at the halfway point and once or twice during the last couple of minutes. The air may cause the chips to fly around inside the basket, making it impossible to keep them in a single layer. It's okay! Shake the basket as needed.
  • Air fryers vary A LOT, so after an initial test batch you may need to adjust the temperature and/or time slightly for your machine.

Variations

Oil-Free Option:  Instead of spraying the tortillas with oil, simply mist or brush them with lime juice or a combination of water and lime. They still crisp up nicely!

Oven-Baked: No air fryer? No problem! These crispy tortilla chips are easy to make in the oven too! First, preheat your oven to 350°F. Then place the cut tortilla wedges in a single layer on a large sheet pan. Bake for 8 minutes, flip the tortilla chips, and bake for another 7-10 minutes or until crisp and golden.

Seasoned: Try changing up the flavor by adding different seasonings. I recommend starting out with a plain batch first, and then feel free to have fun experimenting with a variety of seasonings once you get the hang of it.

  • I like to sprinkle the tortillas with smoked paprika, chili powder, and garlic powder. Sometimes I include nutritional yeast for a cheesy, Doritos flavor.
  • If you're a fan of ranch chips, give this tasty dry ranch mix from Vegan Richa a try.
  • Harissa and Za'atar are also delicious!

How to Store

Store leftover tortilla chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

Serving Suggestions

These crunchy air fryer tortilla chips are perfect as a snack or appetizer with your favorite dips. Try them with pico de gallo, tomato salsa, corn salsa, guacamole, vegan queso, or vegan cheese sauce.

They also make a great base for vegan nachos and pair perfectly with my vegan taco bowls.

You can also serve them as a side with your favorite chili or tacos. Try my TVP tacos, lentil tacos, soy curl vegan taco meat, or these smoky white bean tacos.

FAQs

Do I need to preheat the air fryer?

While you don't always need to preheat your air fryer, I recommend preheating it for this recipe. By preheating the air fryer, your starting temperature is higher, allowing your food to cook faster and get crispier.

Can I use flour tortillas?

Yes, you can use flour tortillas in place of the corn tortillas, but note that the timing may need to be adjusted and of course, they will no longer be gluten-free. If you're vegan like us, be sure to check the ingredients since flour tortillas sometimes contain animal-derived ingredients.
